We Create Our Own Reality – What Are You Creating?

“The phrase ‘to meditate’ does not only mean ‘to examine, observe, reflect, question, wish’; it also has, in the Sanskrit, a more profound meaning, which is ‘to become’.” Krishnamurti

To Become that which you practice is the ultimate goal. This idea then requires us to look at ‘what do we want to become?’ because what we do practice does in fact become us. I am thinking of the times I get frustrated with my husband. He, and I, then become ‘frustration’ unless I hold him in other ways that will counter that ‘practice’ of thinking of him in that way. When I think or ‘meditate’ on “He is so chaotic and stressed.” my guy becomes fixed as those things – chaos and stress. I must confess that it is rarer for me to think of him as ‘brilliant, productive and a hunk’ but he is those things too.

This is scary because quantum physicists pretty much believe that we are what we perceive – literally. We actually do create our world – all of us help perpetuate and create the cultures we live in, the family we grow, our personal life issues and even what Mother Earth looks like. It’s a bit difficult to fathom but this is rapidly becoming common thought today. We are creating everything we see before us.

If this is the case then what are we doing? And when will we wake up to it? Brain scientist and neurobiologists who study long-time meditators say that the neo-cortex of these people is thicker than the average person. The neo-cortex is our higher brain, the part that is the ‘executive’; the one who calls the conscious shots. People who meditate have become able to call on their higher selves better than those who do not meditate. They can calm themselves and stay rational if they need to.

Pretty amazing brains we have. They can grow and change and become what we want to make of them and therefore make of ourselves. Meditation doesn’t have to be hard. Dr. Richard Davidson, from the University of Wisconsin, believes that just one half hour of sitting in contemplation of love and compassion, every day, can add that bulk to each of our brains and make us wiser, calmer, more loving and less judgmental. Now that’s Becoming to me!

Food Combining for Better Health

Many people suffer from indigestion. They have tried a variety of different diets and food detoxes to get themselves feeling better and nothing seems to work. These individuals might consider not what they are eating that is wreaking havoc on their gut, but in fact how they are eating it. Food combining or food un-combining as it is better described, is the idea that different foods have different digestion times. So for example when a protein is paired with a starch, this can cause complete chaos in your bowels, thus they should be eaten at separate times to encourage better digestion.

What does this mean? Well, for you die hard hamburger lovers; it means that you may need to find a new vice. In fact, if you take a second to examine North American food habits, you will find that they are in exact opposition to the body’s digestive method. The meat and potatoes, cereal and milk, or turkey sandwiches, all mean extra work for your body and are no-no’s in food combining rule.

The reason why your body doesn’t do well at digesting all of these different foods at once is actually quite logical. Different foods require different digestive enzymes to help in the digestion process and thus different processing times as well. Some of these enzymes are acid, some alkaline. When put together these two types of enzymes neutralize each other. This means that each one is functioning at a significantly slower level and digestion becomes slow and inefficient. This is what happens in a miscombined meal. The presence of both types of enzymes means the stimulation of opposing digestive juices that are neutralized, creating a backlog of undigested food in the stomach. This process is further intensified as we age and our body’s production of digestive enzymes diminishes. Thus the reason that hamburgers are a big no-no is because proteins require acidic enzymes for digestion, while carbohydrates (starches, fruit, and sugars) are more conducive to an alkaline enzyme. It is this combination of foods that so often leads to indigestion, bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, and poor absorption of nutrients.

For example, fruits digest very quickly, so they need to be eaten on their own. In fact, any quick digesting foods should be eaten alone, because they must wait until the slowest digesting foods leave the stomach before they can leave – a process which can take up to 6 or 8 hours. In the waiting process the fruit or other fast digesting foods begin to decompose, but really just cause added gas, acid and indigestion, while they wait to be able to continue their digestive journey. Thus the best time to eat fruit is on an empty stomach, such as first thing in the morning. Fruit digests in a mere half an hour, when not slowed down by other products, so you can have fruit and shortly thereafter enjoy your meal.

Not only can the food combining cause serious discomfort in the digestion process, it can actually hinder the absorption of vitamins and nutrients. A perfect example of this is explained on drkaslow.com, which explains that, “If we eat cheese, rich in calcium, and at the time it reaches our small intestine, an alkaline digestive process is going on there, then very little (if any) of that calcium will be available to us. The calcium will make a chemical combination with the alkali and become non-absorbable; it will pass through and out of our body unused!”

While North American food combining principles go against digestive rules, there are certain cultures whose food pairing fits with the body’s needs. In fact many Oriental dishes consisting of rice and vegetables, abide by this principal. Vegetables combine with either protein or carbohydrates. They just all can’t go together.

Some simple food combining guidelines for better digestion

• Eat fruit alone- about half an hour before consuming any other food
• Always eat melon on its own
• Don’t eat proteins with starches
• Avoid dessert after a big meal
• Avoid acids with protein i.e.: orange juice with your eggs

Hot Yoga For Detox

23

Hot Yoga is a relatively new twist on an age-old practice. Participants perform the yoga exercises in a heated room at approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat that the body naturally generates through yoga postures, coupled with the increased temperature in the room, make the body sweat more than usual. This heat is thought to increase body flexibility, lower the risk of muscular injury, and help to strengthen the immune system. It is commonly referred to as ‘yoga in a sauna’.

How natural detoxification works

Detoxification is just a fancy word to describe the natural process that the body undergoes to eliminate waste and toxins from the body. There are three main bodily systems that play a role in this process: circulatory, digestive, and lymph. The circulatory system is essentially the transport system that distributes oxygen throughout the body and gets rid of waste products accumulating in the body’s cells. The digestive system processes the food that we eat; storing nutrients and getting rid of whatever the body doesn’t need. Then there is the lymphatic system that collects fluid from the cells and takes it to the lymph nodes that dispose of contaminants in the liquid through the bloodstream.

Body chemistry is such that when healthy and active it will automatically undergo this process, efficiently detoxifying the body on its own. Sometimes, however, because of our diet or lifestyle, the body can become slow or inefficient in the detox process and thus needs a little outside help.

Hot Yoga: best form of detox exercise

While all forms of exercise help the body to eliminate toxins, yoga is especially suited to this process. Yoga postures all focus on stretching and compressing the body, encouraging the flow and good function of the waste removal departments in the body. The fact that the body is being pushed, pulled, and turned in every which way aids the body in the removal of harmful toxins found deep in the body’s tissues, that other forms of exercise simply do not penetrate. These toxins include: carbon dioxide, lactic acid and lymphatic fluid. Furthermore, while you sweat in practically all forms of vigorous exercise, the sauna-like effect of hot yoga usually means you will sweat even more. Sweat is just another way that toxins are released from the body’s pores. In this process your skin converts toxins from fats into simpler and water-soluble compounds, which are released through this excreted liquid. Ammonia, urea, sugar and salts, are among these unwanted contaminants.

Another detox benefit of not just hot yoga, but all types of yoga, is the associated boost in circulation and metabolism. This is achieved through the heavy focus on deep breathing and postures that are simply intensified in the hot yoga setting.

Book recommends for those interested in the latest Sex Science

A while back I read May Roach’s Bonk. She’s a journalist who writes about interesting subjects with odd twists and a great sense of dry humor. Bonk is her third book and is about, well, bonking. In one of the chapters she discusses going to Europe with her husband and getting into an imaging machine that takes images of their interiors as they ‘bonk’. Yes, how the lingam meets and greets the yoni! There are a myriad of possibilities!

I want to volunteer! It would be so interesting, and of great importance, to explore subtle angle shifts related to G-spot, clitoral, and anterior fornix orgasms. Just what does it take to actualize vaginal orgasms for women? As I have always said, it’s all about discovering the right angles of penetration for each of us. We’re all different so even small, subtle changes in angle can make big differences.

Here’s a great over-view of the female sexual hot spots by none other than the famous Desmond Morris: . It’s the last line that is the most telling: “It has been claimed that two out of every three women fail to reach regular orgasms from simple penetrative sex. As mentioned above, most of them find that only digital or oral stimulation of the clitoris can be guaranteed to bring them to climax. This must mean that, for them, the two ‘hot spots’ inside the vagina are not living up to their name. The reason for this, it seems, is monotony in sexual positioning. A group of 27 couples were asked to vary their sexual positions experimentally, employing postures that would allow greater stimulation of the two vaginal ‘hot spots’, and it was found that three-quarters of the females involved were then able to achieve regular vaginal orgasms.”

I don’t know the origins of this study but I would love to know. If you know please let me know.

Here’s another book that looks good though I have not read it yet myself. I intend to. Sharon Moalem’s How Sex Works: Why We Look, Smell, Taste, Feel, and Act the Way We Do.

And a very good book, especially for those of you who are inclined to be a bit more scientific minded is: The Science of Sex by Beverly Whipple (the first G-spot book was co-written by her), Carlos Beyer-Flores & Barry Komisaruk.

Summer is coming. Time to make your reading lists.
I’ll take more suggestions if you have any…
